I. Introduction

First, I'd like to start by saying that if you are impatient and like to level
fast, you should stop reading right now. Perma Novices are about time and
commitment, because the challenge of leveling them takes a long time, as well
as a lot of money. So, if you do not meet any of this criteria, I wish you
adieu.
Perma Novice: A Perma Novice is exactly what its name states, a Permanent
Novice. This means that you can never change jobs throughout your entire RO
career. Novices are very limited in leveling, as they can't level in many high
level areas like other classes can with ease. This reduces the amount of
leveling areas open to a Perma Novice, and makes leveling that much harder.
But, with enough patience and determinination, you will be able to pull your
Novice up to about level 70 or higher. What you have to remember when leveling,
though, is you do have your limits. A Perma Novice is the weakest class. It
has the lowest attack strength, HP/SP, and Attack Speed (other than Mages) out
of any class. This greatly adds to the challenge of leveling up, but also
makes it that much more fun. Most of the time, people will have a positive
outlook on your Novice. I've even had a few Priests follow me around before
giving me a free healslave for about 25-30 minutes, just because they were
impressed. But, you will also get some people that do not have a positive
outlook, but rather a negative one. They will KS you, or loot you, or just say
some plain nasty things. But, the best thing you can do is just know that they
are completely ignorant and oblivious to everything involved in making a Perma
Novice. The last player response, is the confused one. Some people will follow
you around constantly and ask you questions. Most of them are just simple ones,
which I have included in the FAQ section. ^_^ If you just answer them, they
will probably be very nice to you and respectful; but if you don't, they will
probably get angry with you. Anyway, enough rambling. Back to explaining a
Novice. Novices can be like Swordsman or Thieves, depending on your build.
Obviously if you go VIT as your main defensive stat, then you're more of a
Swordsman. But, if you go AGI as your main defensive stat, then you're more of
a Thief. Even if you build your Novice correctly and he is very powerful, I
suggest another character like a Mage or Archer class to fund your Perma
Novice.
Here are some things you should remember about your Perma Novice when making
one:
-Novices have the lowest HP out of ANY job.
-Novices have the lowest attack strength out of any class.
-Novices have the slowest attack speed out of any class, with the exception of
Mages.
-Novices get no job bonuses (stats).
-Novices have very limited equipments. All their equipments are the lowest in
numbers (Defense and Attack Srength).
-Novices have no active skills, with the exception of Play Dead and First Aid.
All of their skills must be obtained from cards.
+Novices will not be using many active skills, so you do not need to worry
about SP.
+Novices start with half HP and half SP when they die.
-Novices rely on potions throughout their entire life to level.
+Novices are simple to play, just CTRL+Click and you can level.
-Novices take a long time to level.
-Novices rely on money/gears more than any other class. The richer you are,
the better you are.
Here I will clarify the differences between a Super Novice and a Perma Novice,
just so you won't be confused as to which is which.
Perma Novices don't get stat bonuses, while Super Novices do.
Perma Novices don't get HP bonuses, while Super Novices do (at level 99 they
get a high boost).
Perma Novices do have Play Dead, while Super Novices don't (the main perk to a
Perma Novice).
Perma Novices don't have any skills (other than Play Dead and First Aid),
while Super Novices have almost all first class skills.
I hope this clears up everything for you, so that you won't have any questions.
Now, on to the actual guide.

II. What Stats do for a Perma Novice

STR: Raises your ATK. This is very helpful to a Perma Novice since you do not
have any weapon masteries. This is usually the primary stat in Perma Novice
builds.
AGI: Raises your ASPD. This is also very helpful to a Perma Novice since
Novices have the slowest ASPD of any class other than Mage.
VIT: Raises your Def, HP, and Status Ailment resistance. This is most commonly
used to resist status ailments, but I like to have a bit more for Def.
INT: Raises your MATK, SP, and MDEF. If you have any INT, I suggest
reconsidering your build.
DEX: Raises your Hit and minimum damage. Perma Novices use this if they plan
on fighting high flee monsters, or want to try PvP.
LUK: Raises your Crit Rate and Perfect Dodge. You would add to this if you
intended on making a Crit Novice.

III. Stat Builds

STR/AGI/DEX: One of the most common builds for a Perma Novice. These are very
powerful (for a Novice, anyway). These focus mostly on offense, and not so
much on defense. You will have a bit of trouble leveling up until about level
40, when your flee really kicks in.
STR/VIT/DEX: Another common build for a Perma Novice. This build levels very
quickly up until about level 60, but then starts to slow down very rapidly.
STR/AGI/LUK: These are not so common. This build dodges a lot, and also kills
fairly quickly. These do pretty well in PvP, but in PvM they don't do too hot
until about level 50.
STR/VIT/LUK: Even less common than the STR/AGI/LUK build, this Novice is sure
to do well in PvP. Despite its low attack speed, this Novice can deal high
damage and tank quite a bit.
STR/AGI/VIT/DEX: My favorite build. This focuses mostly on high damage output,
but also has very good defense. This is a very good build to go with for PvP.
STR/AGI/VIT/LUK: Great build. Has very high attack power, as well as good
defense. Probably the best build to go with for PvP.

Remember, the higher the uprade, the better you will do.
Upper Headgear: Sakkat (+1 AGI, very good item for a Novice)
Middle Headgear: Evil Wing Ears (+1 STR, brings you to 100 STR and gives you
the bonus. Very helpful)
Lower Headgear: Pretty much whatever you want, nothing really helps here.
Armor: Hard Novice Breastplate (Pupa Card) (+700 HP The backbone of your Perma
Novice, this gives you the biggest chunk of your HP)
Shield: Rigid Guard (Thief Bug Egg Card) (+400 HP Very good Novice item.
Remember, every HP counts. The only time you would switch this would be for
damage reduction)
Shoes: Seeker's Sandals (Alarm Card) (+300 HP +1 VIT. I don't really think I
need to explain this one, it explains itself.)
Garment: Mocking/Immune Hood (Whisper/Raydric Card) (Use the Mocking Hood for
early leveling, and the Immune Hood once you have a lot of flee)
Accessories: Two Clip of Knock-Backs (Bongun Card) (These give you a good
chance to auto-cast level 1 Bash, which is actually very helpful in leveling)
Weapon: Here there are many choices.
Primary Weapon: +10 Triple Hurricane Stiletto (Andre Card) (This is the most
powerful weapon you can get) or +10 Double Extending Hybrid Stiletto (Two
Injustice Cards and one Sidewinder Card) (This is pretty cool to use with two
Clip of Knock-Back because you will be using active skills like no tomorrow)
Secondary Weapon(s): When you get richer, you can get +10 Racial Stilettos or
+10 Size Stilettos. You should only use these when you have about 150 ATK.
Leveling areas:
1-15: Poporings are probably the best. I suggest getting a friend to tank you
until you can use your Stilleto.
16-40: Culverts level 3 will keep you going for awhile. If you bring down a
few hundred red pots, you can go for quite awhile and gain a few levels before
coming back up.
41-70: Metalings on ein_fild07 are a very good source of experience. Just
avoid Geographers and the occasional Ungoliant and you should be fine.
71-99: You can either stay on Metalings, or you can try High Orcs.

71-99: High Orcs are best here. If you think High Orcs are still too hard,
stay on Metalings until you can take High Orcs.

IV. Skills

You're probably wondering why I put a skills area for a Perma Novice guide.
Well, Novices actually can use some skills but they are card based, with the
exception of Play Dead and First Aid.

IV A. Active Skills

First Aid: Turn 3 SP into 5 HP. This is a pretty useless skill in my opinion.
Play Dead: The ultimate hide, it does not drain SP over time. This, in my
opinion, is THE best skill in the game. You can wittle something down, Play
Dead, heal up, then finish killing it. Very fun skill.
Envenom: Comes from a Poison Spore Card. Decent skill to use, but Novices do
not have much SP to be spamming skills.
Heal: Comes from a Vitata Card. Good to use as a replacement for pots, you
could add a bit of INT to use this often.
Cloaking: Comes from a Frilldora Card. Completely useless. I can only see
people using this as an escape from monsters, but Novices have Play Dead so..
Teleport: Comes from a Creamy Card. Good to use for quick pot restock runs.
Steal: Comes from a Joker Card. Decent skill, but in the best leveling areas
for Novices there aren't many good things to steal.
Magnum Break: Comes from a Marine Sphere Card. Pretty much useless. Too much
SP for not enough damage. But, this could be good to use in Culverts leveling.
Cure: Comes from an Obeaune Card. Pretty much useless unless you NEED to Cure
yourself.
Discount: Comes from a Pirate Skeleton Card. Great card unless you have a
merchant.
Detoxify: Comes from a Poporing Card. Completely useless unless you
desperately need to remove Poison.
Hide: Comes from a Smokie Card. 100% useless because you have Play Dead.
Sight: Comes from a Horong Card. Not that great unless you're leveling on
monsters with hide, or in PvP vs. a Thief class.

IV B. Chance on Hit Skills

Meteor Storm: Comes from a Bloody Knight Card. I don't really see this being
too useful, but if you feel the need to use it, more power to you.
Frost Diver: Comes from a Hatii Baby Card. This could be pretty fun to use.
Once they freeze, switch to a Wind Stiletto or something. But, good luck
getting it.
Storm Gust: Comes from a Stormy Knight Card. Could be a great card, but good
luck getting one.
Fire Ball: Comes from a Mutant Draganoid Card. I don't see much use for this..
but if you get one, why not use it?
Sonic Blow: Comes from an Injustice Card. Possibly the best Perma Novice Card,
deals quite a bit of damage when it goes off (which is quite often).
Double Attack: Comes from a Sidewinder Card. Good skill when it goes off.
Bowling Bash: Comes from a Gryphon Card. This could be a great skill, but it
would be pretty hard to get a Mini-Boss card.
Snatch: Comes from a Wanderer Card. Pointless card. Only a KSer would use this
(in my opinion), and I don't approve of that.
Heal: Comes from an Enchanted Peach Tree Card. Great card for leveling. You
will heal yourself as you level, so you don't need any pots.
Bash: Comes from a Bongun Card. Best card for a Perma Novice, hands down
(unless you are a Crit Novice and need Kobold Clips). Goes off quite often and
does quite a bit of damage. Great for leveling.
Unbarring Octave/Frost Joker: Comes from a Violy Card. Only good if you are
partied with someone. Only good if you have a Wind Stiletto, even though the
chance of freezing is really low. If it activates, though, you can switch to a
Wind Stiletto, and do some pretty high damage. (Everything on screen has a
chance to be frozen)
Impositio Manus: Comes from an Owl Duke Card. Wonderful card for leveling, if
you can get your hands on one.
Lex Aeterna: Comes from an Owl Baron Card. I don't really see much of a
purpose for this, if Bash goes off from a Bongun Card then it is already like
double damage and then some.
Jupitel Thunder: Comes from a Wind Ghost Card. Great card, but quite expensive.
If you can get one, then use it.
Summon Spirit Sphere: Comes from a Greatest General Card. Great for leveling,
just switch until it casts then switch back to your regular accessory.
Heal (Enemy): Comes from a Chepet Card. I can only see this being used for
killing Undeads/Demons.

Stone Curse: Comes from a Pest or Dark Frame Card. Great to use in PvP, but
you might die very quickly without your Pupa Card.
Blessing: Comes from a Geographer Card. Could be good to use in leveling (put
it on, get Blessing, switch back to your Hard armor again), but it's better to
level with an Acolyte class.
Guard: Comes from a Clock Card. This is a great card for leveling, just keep
it on until Guard casts and then switch back to your Hard armor.
Improve Concentration: Comes from an Anolian Card. This could be a good card,
but the length of the skill is too short for it to be worthwhile.
Teleport: Comes from an Antonio Card. There is really no point to this.. I
guess it could be fun in PvP, but it is very hard to get a Mini-Boss card.
Heal: Comes from a Loli Ruri Card. This is great for high level STR/VIT/DEX
Novices. By the time it goes off, you'll have healed more damage than you've
taken (you'll never need a pot!). If you have a bit of INT, the effect will be
greater.
Quagmire: Comes from a Punk Card. This could be pretty fun for leveling, but I
would rather use my Immune.
Snatch: Comes from a Wanderer Card. Pointless card. Only a KSer would use this
(in my opinion), and I don't approve of that.
Gloria: Comes from a Grand Peco Card. This is a wonderful card for a
STR/AGI/LUK Novice.
Kyrie Eleison: Comes from an Amon Ra Card. This is a great card. Good luck
getting one, though.
Sight: Comes from an Alarm Card. Think about it- if you are trying to find an
enemy that is hidden, how are you going to find it if it needs to hit you
first? Although, the +300 HP is nice.
Meteor Storm: Comes from a Dark Lord Card. Could be great to use, but good
luck getting one.
Signum Crucis: Comes from an Ancient Mummy Card. I don't really see a use for
this unless you're killing Undeads.
Envenom: Comes from a Poisonous Toad Card. No purpose for this. Not enough
damage to be worthwhile, unless you are a STR/VIT/DEX Novice and get hit often.
Endure: Comes from a Lude Card. Could be good for a STR/VIT/DEX Novice. But
other than that, I wouldn't use it.
Cloaking: Comes from a Shinobi Card. Really no point to this, Play Dead >
Cloaking. But, if you're in PvP, it could be good for an escape.
Increase AGI: Comes from a Quve Card. Could be fine for leveling, but I still
prefer to use my Clip of Knock-Back because the duration isn't long enough.

Why did you make a Perma Novice?
Well originally in Beta I made a Perma Novice because none of the first
classes were particularly attractive to me. So, I guess I made one because I
figured it would be the most fun. Some people, though, make Perma Novices
either for the challenge, the fame, or just out of boredom (people who do it
out of boredom don't really get very far).
Why aren't you a Super Novice?
Well, if I came this far as just a weak little Novice, why would I waste it
all to change to a Super Novice. Don't get me wrong, Super Novices are fun; I
have one myself. It is just that I'd never want to change into a job and put
all that time spent to waste.
Why won't you change into a (insert job here)?
Same reason as above.
How do you pay for all those potions and gears?! Isn't it expensive?
Yes, but I also have an Assassin which can get me quite a bit of money easily.
It isn't that much of a problem.
What level are you?
This has to be the most common question.. I'm just adding it here to warn
anyone who wants to make a Perma Novice that you will get this question asked
5+ times a day. Just answer with what level you are, and deal them if they
don't believe you.
How old are you?
For some reason people like to ask this. I'm 13; just answer with your age if
you get asked this.

VI. PvP Strategies

Now.. What you all have been waiting for, PvP Strategies for a Perma Novice!
It is highly possible to be able to kill people in PvP, even if they are
second classes! Just follow each strategy I list, and with practice, you
should be able to do fairly well in PvP.
Mages: Easiest class to kill by far. Just keep smacking at them and smacking,
then when their cast bar is almost full, use Play Dead. Once the casting is
over just come back out of Play Dead and start attacking them. Easy enough,
right?
Acolytes: Another easy one. The only problem is that they can heal. Just bring
some potions and try to outlast them. All you can really do to win here is to
outlast them. If they start casting Holy Light, use the Mage strategy. Just
Play Dead then attack again.
Thieves: These are pretty tricky. Just bring some Crit Gears to break their
Flee, and hope to outflee them. There isn't much else I can say.. But watch
out for Envenom. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to dodge Envenom
using Play Dead. Once you see the spiral animation and hear the sound, use
Play Dead IMMEDIATELY. If done correctly, you will have made them miss. With
practice, and I mean lots of it, you will be able to do this fairly easily.
Swordsmen: These are pretty easy, just Flee them and outlast them. Bring some
Crit Gears to break their massive Defense. Watch out for Bash, though. This is
extremely hard to dodge. But, you can do it if you follow the Envenom strategy
and use Play Dead to dodge it. Other than Bash, they can't really do much to
you. Just try to live longer than them, and that is about all I can say.
Archers: These are the hardest ones to kill. The only thing that I can suggest
is that you Play Dead, then come out walk towards them and Play Dead again.
Once you're there, you should try using a Stun weapon, and just keep hitting
them. Watch out for Double Strafe. You can use Play Dead to dodge it, but it
is nearly impossible.
Wizards: Follow the same strategy as Mages.
Sages: This can be a bit hairy. If they are Battle Sages, then it will be very
hard. Just use a combination of the Swordsman and Mage strategy. Use Play Dead
when they cast, and just try to outlive them.
Priests: Good luck. That is all I can say. It would take years to kill these
guys, even second classes can barely kill them. Just bring Crit Gears and a
ton of potions. They will probably be able to restore SP faster than you can
make them use Heal. So.. I don't think you can really win here. These are the
only ones that really give me a lot of trouble.
Monks: Same things as Priests. These are very hard. If they are Asura, you
lose. If they are combo, you have a small chance at winning if you can Flee
them. Just bring Crit Gears and try to kill them. Bring a lot of potions, too.
Assassins: If they are Crit, you lose. It is as simple as that. There is no
way to kill a Crit Sin using a Perma Novice. But, if they are DDS then you may
be able to Flee them. Just bring a lot of potions and Crit Gear, as usual.
Rogues: Same thing as Assassins if they are Dagger. Watch out for Backstab
though, this can deal some lethal damage. If they are Bow Rogues, follow the
Archer strategy.
Crusaders: They can't do too much damage, just bring Crit Gears to break their
massive Defense. If they are Grand Cross Crusaders, just use the Mage strategy
if they have a slow cast time. If they have a fast cast time, try to run out
of the Grand Cross radius until the spell is done, then resume attacking.
Bring a ton of potions, as this will be a long battle.
Knights: Pray. That is my only suggestion. It is nearly impossible to kill a
Knight in PvP with a Perma Novice. Just follow the Swordsman strategy.. And
bring a ton of potions and Crit Gears, as this will be a very, very, long
fight.
Hunters: Same as Archer strategy, but you will probably die before you can get
to them. They will deal too much damage for you to handle.
Bards: Same as Archer strategy, but if they use Melody Strike on you, you lose.
Bards are probably the hardest class to beat in PvP, as they can kill you in
one hit.
Any Transcendant class: Get down on your knees and start praying. You will
need massive luck and thousands of potions to beat a Transcendant with a Perma
Novice.
